Residential Retreat Guidelines

Essential Guidelines for Your Residential Retreat

Top 5 Simple Guidelines

1. Be On Time

Please be present for every session exactly as planned. Reach the meditation hall early as discussed by the Guide. When we are on time, we show respect to the Dhamma and help the program run smoothly for everyone.

2. Observe Noble Silence

Once the Guide announces it, please maintain complete “Noble Silence.” Kindly switch off all mobile phones and digital devices. These are big distractions for your mind, your actions, and your speech. Let us keep the atmosphere quiet and peaceful.

3. Stay Within the Compound

You are requested not to move outside the center boundaries. Please stay within the premises and the limits set by the Guide. This journey is about going inside yourself, so please help us manage the program by staying put. We cannot spend time searching for individuals outside the gates.

4. Metta Vipassana – Life is Meditation, Meditation is Life

This practice is all about maintaining Samatha (Tranquility) and Sati (Mindfulness) to gain Vipassana (Insight) through Metta (Loving-kindness). Keep this feeling of kindness and awareness alive throughout the day—whether you are walking, sitting, or eating.

5. Give This Method a Fair Chance

You may already have your own meditation practice from elsewhere. However, while you are here, please give full respect to this specific method. This will make your stay fruitful and ensure you do not disrupt the program or the other participants. Follow the instructions exactly as given.

Gentle Agreement

💖 Mindset & Engagement

  • Loving-Kindness and Acceptance: The core of this practice is Metta (loving-kindness). Focus on building acceptance, kindness, and mindfulness in all interactions.
  • Keep a Smile Always: Maintain a gentle smile throughout the retreat—on your face, in your mind, and in your heart. 😊
  • Spiritual Wellbeing, Not Recreation: This retreat is dedicated to spiritual growth. Please remain mindful and fully engaged in the practice that brought you here.
  • Kindness in Communication: When sharing any challenges with the staff or guides, please do so with kindness and mindfulness.

The Power of Sīla (Morality) & Noble Silence 🤫

  • Sīla (Moral Foundation): Maintain high discipline throughout the day. A strong foundation in moral conduct (Sīla) is essential for deep meditation and insight.
  • Noble Silence: Observe Noble Silence (no talking, gesturing, or communication) to maximize your spiritual benefit and allow deep concentration.

⏰ Schedule & Solitude

  • Punctuality: Be on time for all scheduled activities. Use an alarm to ensure punctuality (Mobile phones will be switched off). 🔔
  • Guidance Only: For any need, reach out only to the team or teacher. Do not discuss anything with other practitioners. Always imagine you are practicing alone. 👤

👚 Health & Decorum

  • Dress Code (Simple and Modest): Wear simple, comfortable cotton clothing that covers the shoulders, stomach, and knees. Avoid sleeveless tops, shorts, or restrictive outfits.
  • Avoid Strong Scents: Please do not wear perfume, cologne, deodorant, or heavily scented oils. 🚫
  • Medication: Bring an adequate supply of personal medication and inform the organizer of any serious medical conditions. 💊
  • Eating Principle: Eat less (fill stomach to 80%) to avoid drowsiness. No outside food or special dietary demands (beyond basic). 🍽️

📝 Practice Management & Essentials

Morning Exercise: Bring a yoga mat if you wish, as we have time allocated for morning exercises.

Meditation Journaling: Bring a notebook and a pen/pencil. Logging your experience is a powerful habit for self-retrospection and tracking progress. 📝

Handling Discomfort: If you face any discomfort, reach out to the organizer or guide/teacher without hesitation for support.

Sitting Gear: You may bring your own seating cushion/mat if desired (basic support is provided). 🧘
